The Complete Guide to Music Technology Using Cubase 12

A perfect match with Getting Started with Dorico 4.3 - A practical guide (Darren Jones, MTT, 2023).

I'm a very visual learner, and I felt this book adequately covered everything needed for navigating the Cubase 12 DAW. It was categorized and indexed so well that I didn't have to search very far to uncover a specific topic. There are many technical books regarding Cubase and Recording software in general, but I felt this author did the best job of synopsizing this program.

"Entertaining" is not normally a word you associate with an instructional book, let alone one on the mundane subject of a computer recording software. But I have to say I find this book really entertaining. This book contains just about anything and everything you will ever need to know about Cubase 12. It even has a section on music theory. Not only is this book very well-planned from start to finish, the way in which the book is written is just exemplary. The language used is simple, precise and concise. Complicated issues and subject-matters are broken down and explained with ease. But what is fascinating is there is a light-heartedness throughout the book, as though the author really enjoys sharing his phenomenal knowledge with you. You could almost see the smile on his face when he is explaining the intricacies of the chord tracks. I really enjoy reading this book and learnt so much about the subject-matter. His English is impeccable. It is so refreshing to read proper writing for a change. I have a suspicion Darren Jones is British.

I have only scratch the surface using this great book. I had been using Cubase SX3 since early 2000. I decided to update all of the recording gear. Cubase 12 looked really over whelming when installed on the Windows 11 system. This book takes away that fear of learning a new updated software. I can't wait to see by next year where my experience has grown.

Cubase is a product of vast capabilities and innumerable little convenience features - this book offers a rich exploration of all it has to offer. Time spent sitting in front of your DAW with this book in hand is well rewarded.

As a new Cubase 12 Pro user, my intention was to receive a compendium which summarizes all important functions related to this specific DAW release. However, instead of finding the information I was looking for, I realized that this book was just full of stuff which sometimes did not even relate to the title it was given. Instead of guiding a user through particular procedures, e.g. helping to improve the general workflow, it loses itself in music theory which I'm anyway fully aware of. Just basic DAW operation steps are described which are self-explanatory. For example, all features that a Cubase Pro version offers (since several previous releases), like the Control Room or Spectra Layers etc., are definitly NOT covered at all. Instead, you might eventually find a one-liner, telling you that these topics are intentionally skipped and are definitly not in the scope of this book. What? Sorry, but this is an insolence beyond compare. In other words, I wasted a lot of money on this book without gaining any benefit. Watching Youtube videos might have been the better choice in this case - no cap.
